The author points out that, in spite of its bad reputation, the „yellow press“ deserves the attention of linguists and offers her own observation on the linguistic means aimed at achieving attractiveness in its texts. The analysis is based on material from the tabloids published in the Czech Republic and in Bulgaria.
This article offers a look into the controversial issue of the semantics and usage of passive structures by examining evidence from Bulgarian, Russian, and English. Efforts are made to clarify the semantic differences between active and passive structures, especially with respect to the notions of „passive meaning“ and „centrifugal/centripetal direction of verbal action“
The article deals with the controversial issue of the relations between voice and transitivity. It is claimed that the traditional approach which maintains the existence of a direct and obligatory connection between transitivity and passivization potential contradicts language reality. A proposal is made to replace the traditional binary opposition of transitive/intransitive verbs with a scale of transitivity.
The authors of the article analyse contrastively various types of pronominal constructions in Bulgarian and Slovak which, somewhat paradoxically, consist of two components with opposite meanings (definiteness and indefiniteness) like някак там, nejako tam. The pronoun forms combined may belong to one and the same or to two different microsystems. They can substitute words of different classes: nouns, adjectives and adverbs. Asymmetries between the two languages are pointed out.
The article considers the translocative formations with the prefixes pre- and pro- in Bulgarian and Serbo-Croatian. A new classification of the derivatives considered is suggested, based on formal and semantic criteria, categories and sub-categories within the transgressive aktionsart and preceded by word-formation and semantic analysis combining elements of the theory of meaning as a hierarchic and predicate-argument structure. Contrastive observations on the kinds of motivating bases and on the etymological and functional proximity of pre- and pro- in both languages are made.
