The grammatical function expresses the syntactic relations in the sentence and allows the differentiation of its components. The communicative function serves functional sentence perspective. The stylistic function is prominent in the language of fiction and the media and relies above all on inversion. On the whole the communicative function dominates in synthetic languages, while in analytical languages (Bulgarian) the grammatical function comes to the fore. This is a simplified picture, however, and there is often a complex interplay of functions. Thus Bulgarian emphasizes the communicative function by means of doubling of the object, uses of the article, passive constructions, etc. The article makes use of Byelorussian and Bulgarian material to prove its points.}, author = {Бъчваров, Янко} }
