The lexemes man and people and their most frequent synonyms in Portuguese and in Bulgarian are analysed contrastively in this paper. It is obvious from the analysis that the treated lexical units have quite clear content only at first glance. In fact it is because of their small number of semantic features that they enter into complex interrelations and they often function as pronouns showing considerable differences in the two contrasted languages.

The author’s psychometric study determines the quantitative reference of няколко within the interval 2–6 objects. The Russian несколько has similar approximative functions, while Portuguese, having no such a quantifier, has developed for the same purpose secondary meanings of other quantification means. As far as the quantification of counting and the quantification of measuring are determined, an analysis is made of the subclasses of absolute and relative quantification. The specific displays of the separate quantifiers are connected with the name’s semantics, as well as with the process of quantification, pluralization and determination, one or another process dominating in different context conditions. The invariant semantic component is examined within the framework of the quantum semantic component of (+universal). The three functions of the operator are demonstrated empirically, namely, as a marker of universal distributive and group quantification and as a unit performing ‘strictly’ quantitative functions for a specific semantic class of nouns. The Bulgarian functional translation equivalents of the Portuguese operator are shown in a contrastive perspective with differences and similarities in form and content stressed upon.
