The present paper is an attempt to systematize the linguistic means for apologizing in modern Bulgarian. According to the typology proposed by Renate Rathmayr the Bulgarian apologies are divided in two main groups: explicit and implicit ones. A detailed description of the use of apologies depending on the social roles of interlocutors is also provided in the paper.

The study is based on methods elaborated by semantic and cognitive linguistic theories. The collation of the results of our linguistic analysis with the results from other investigations, for instance anthropological, historographic, and other research, gives one ground to suppose that the Bulgarians belong to a wider community of nations that have similar views of the world.
